This super dynamic building is perched on the literal edge of the Rio Pueblo Gorge just south of Taos. The Majority of the 5 acre parcel is located along, and below the basalt cliffs and is defined by the banks of the river below. The prescribed building envelope had three defined sides and the fourth, cliff side, is defined by gravity, the design takes full advantage of that with a steel cantilevered space pushed to the cliffs edge and overlooking the gorge.
Views in all directions are captured by large windows in the living spaces, the Taos Mountains to the East and the deep volcanic gorge to the North and West. A western oriented deck offers elevated views of the gorge and the river below while the east side offers a sunken patio providing reprieve from the often-windy conditions of the area along with a cozy fire pit for gathering. Raw exposed steel elements around the
exterior cast shadows, frame views, create spaces for gathering and in time will provide climbing opportunities for
flowering vines.
